Meet Dr. Binkley

Why did I chose to become a doctor? I have always been a good student. Many of my high school classmates were amazed and even a little annoyed that I achieved high test scores with seemingly minimal effort.

It didn’t help that I frequently fell asleep in class.  I had a couple of great teachers early on who taught me how to really pay attention to a lecture, and take good notes.  But struggling to stay awake in the middle of afternoon classes eventually became a significant concern.  One that led me to seek the advice of the smartest, most caring man I knew at the time––my chiropractor, Ed Counselman, DC.

The conversation went something like this:

“I keep falling asleep in class, for no apparent reason.”

“How much sugar do you eat?” he asked me.

“How much have you got?” I replied. I then confidently suggested that since I had always been thin, there was no reason to not eat as much sugar as I could swallow.

“The sugar is making you sleepy,” he said.

“What? Sugar gives you energy, doesn’t it?”

“And no matter how much you eat, you still fall asleep in the middle of the day, right?”

I nodded, confused.

“Your body doesn’t know what to do with all that sugar, when you’re just sitting around in class,” he said. “It’s a roller coaster. Your blood sugar spikes then crashes. And so do you…”

This was my introduction to the profound effects of diet, nutrition and exercise on nearly aspect of health.  I quit eating any sugar, and immediately felt dramatically better.  Intrigued with the possibility of helping people with nutritional as well as physical problems, I decided to become a chiropractor myself.

Todd J. Binkley, DC

Dr. Binkley was born in Topeka, Kansas, on November 11, 1964. He did his undergraduate training in biology and chemistry at the University of Kansas, in Lawrence, and at Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City. He received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1989, at Palmer College in Davenport, Iowa.

Palmer College of Chiropractic, established in 1895, is where the profession of chiropractic was founded. Over a hundred and ten years later, it remains the largest chiropractic institution in the world, and continues to draw students and faculty from nations around the globe. In addition to the extensive foundational anatomy and physiology coursework taught in most medical schools, Palmer’s core curriculum is heavily weighted in neurology, radiology, and a broad spectrum of chiropractic techniques.

After receiving his doctorate from Palmer, Dr. Binkley acquired a diploma from the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners, and received state licenses from the state Board of Chiropractic Examiners in California and Kansas. He continues to expand his knowledge and expertise by attending numerous post-graduate courses each year.

He has over ten years of training and experience with Network Spinal Analysis, developed by Dr. Donald Epstein. In 1998, he began studying the work of Thomas Hanna (Somatics, as taught by Dr. James Dreaver), and he continues to apply and expand this work as well as teach it to others. In 2002, he completed a two-year diplomat course in Bio-Energetic Synchronization Technique, and continues to study and utilize the work of Dr. MT Morter, III. He has developed and expanded his case management and leadership skills over many years with Dr. Reggie Gold, Dr. Lenny Cocco, Dr. Sue Morter, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Toastmasters International, The Mankind Project and Landmark Education.

Dr. Binkley considers alignment-based Yoga (based on the teachings of BKS Iyengar) to be one of the most important tools in his practice. He has studied alignment-based Yoga since the year 2000, with Bryan Legere, and Aadil Palkivala. He also teaches Anatomy and Physiology at the Ventura Yoga Studio, as part of 200-hour teacher’s training certificate program offered there, the highlight of which is often a guided tour the Body Worlds anatomy exhibit at the California Science in Los Angeles. In 2006, Dr. Binkley dramatically expanded his services by offering comprehensive nutritional laboratory testing and analysis. He has studied extensively with Dr. Van D. Merkle, and continues to devote many hours each week to the study and research of the exciting and rapidly expanding field of Science Based Nutrition.
